As per the census of 2011, the population of Allahabad was 1,216,719, making it the 32nd city in terms of population in the country. The female to male ratio was pegged at about 888 while the under 6 population was 12.4%. Literacy rate effectively was about 78.29%.
Languages being spoken in the city are English, urdu and hindi. The type of hindi dialect is Awadhi that is spoken in Allahabad, while people mostly in the cities speak the Khariboli dialect. The area near to the non-Doabi part in the east of Allahabad, the bagheli is more common dialect. In few areas, people also speak Punjabi and Bengali.
Most of the major Indian religions are seen to be followed in Allahabad with 86.81% being hindus and 12.72% being muslims. Other religious groups in the city are 0.18% Christians, 0.13% Sikhs and 0.04% Buddhists.
