In the state of Uttar Pradesh, Allahabad is among the biggest centres for commercial activities. Being a prominent industrial township, there are about 3000 small scale organizations, and large and medium units of industries numbering 18. An All India Census for Small Scale Industries conducted for the 3rd time in India, showed that about 10,000 units under small scale industries that are unregistered are found in the entire district, where the number of people employed runs into many thousands.
Most of the industries are related to glass and wire products. Phulpur and naini are the two important industrial zones in the city, with many units of public and private companies along with their factories and offices. Some of the popular units are AREVA T & D India, which belongs to the Areva multinationa group, Indian Telephone Industries Ltd in Naini that manufactures equipments for transmissions, Bharat Pumps & Compressors BPC , which has been declared as a Miniratna, etc. Major items that are produced are systems of optic fibres of types SDH and PDH and various types of telephonic gadgets. Other industries are Allahabad Manufacturing Division of Reliance Industries, Triveni Structurals Limited or TSL which is a part of the Bharat Yantra Nigam, Hindustan Cables or HCL which is now under the control of Defence in order to revive it, GEEP battery, etc. Presently also, there is in Phulpur the IFFCO which has two separate units for urea production and this was previously the largest complex of fertilizers in the world as per the feed stock of naptha. But in recent years, the IFFCO plant has been working with natural gas.
The unit of Baidynath Ayurveda is located in Naini, where the manufacturing complex is located in an area of 30 acres, which is also the world’s largest unit of its type, and was so mentioned by Pt Jawahar Lal Nehru when he visited the plant in 1965. A total of about 800 different products are manufactured in this unit and also can produce the bulk drugs that goes into these formulations. The unit of Baidyanath Ayurveda was also recognized when the Nagarjuna award for quality was presented to Shri Ram Awtar, the Managing Director of Shree Baidyanath Ayurveda by the Smt Pratibha Patil, the president of India.
Three thermal power mega projects are in the pipeline to be constructed under the mega projects at Bara, karchhana, and meja tehsils of Allahabad district. These are jointly being set up by National Thermal Power Corporation and Jaypee group, and they are supposed to be finished by 2016.
BPCL or Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited is among the country’s largest companies of oil marketing, and it is in the plan to put up a refinery with an annual capacity of 7 million tons of fuel at Lohgara, with expenditure of about 62 billion, in order to thaw the high discrepancy of demand and supply in the north of India. This project is supposed to get over by 2020. A bottling plant is being set up by Indian Railways in Allahabad for the Rail Neer packaged water bottles with private and public partnership.
